![]() ![]() Google has announced that users on the free version of Hangouts will get a prompt to transition to Google Chat starting on 27 June 2022. Chat, together with Rooms and Meet, will also be integrated deeply into the Gmail app as part of Google’s Workspace migration. Google to kill Hangouts by the end of the year. While Chat isn’t an exact 1-to-1 replacement of Hangouts, it actually offers a bunch of additional features for group chats and collaboration around files and tasks, as well as new security tools. Currently, you have to be a paying G Suite/Workspace user to access the service (though somehow it’s enabled on my free personal account). One interesting wrinkle here: Chat will now also become free to use for consumers. And there are now so many apps that all seemingly do the same thing that you’ll have no idea which to open to do what. Nor Allo, which I think also no longer exists. Instead, you’ll want the Voice app or the Messages app. You used to be able to use Hangouts with Google Fi and Google Voice, but soon you won’t be able to. Meet is like Chat for Enterprise with a focus on Rooms, I think. It’s also a part of Gmail which includes Chat, I think. I think that’s gone in favor of Hangouts which is now gone in favor of Chat. Making a change in Google Calendar itself will stick and sync over to Bus圜al. As for “Hangouts Chat”, which was a thing, I have no idea. I’ve read this post five times and I’m still so confused. I mean… what? I am a user of all these products and I am so confused. With Chat, you can more easily plan with others on goals and similar interests, share and collaborate on files, and assign tasks to help keep everyone on the same page.
